A Brief History
The name “Siem Reap” translates to “Defeat of Siam.” According to tradition, King Ang Chan named the city after defeating a Siamese army in 1549. However, many scholars regard this story as a folk legend, with the true origin of the name still uncertain.
From the 16th to the 19th century, the region experienced conflict and political instability, often falling under control of neighboring powers, Vietnam and Siam (Thailand). Between 1795 and 1907, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Sisophon were governed by Siam and referred to as Inner Cambodia, before being returned to Cambodia under French Indochina.
Siem Reap remained a quiet village until European explorers like Henri Mouhot brought global attention to the ruins of Angkor in the 19th century.
